Calculation Examples
• Current grade: 70%
• Final exam weight: 50%
• Target grade: 80%
Formula: [80% - (100% - 50%) × 70%] / 50% = 90% required on the final exam.
• Quiz 1: Weight 20%, Grade 80%
• Quiz 2: Weight 30%, Grade 90%
• Target class grade: 85%
• Final Exam Weight: 50%
Calculation: Current average of quizzes is 86%. To get an 85% overall, you need an 84% on the 50% final exam.
How to Use the Final Grade Calculator
Finals week is stressful enough without having to do complex algebra just to figure out what you need to pass. Whether you are aiming for an A or just trying to keep your head above water, this final exam grade calculator takes the guesswork out of your current standing.
- Final Exam Grade: Use this if you know your current overall average, your target class grade, and what percentage the final exam is worth.
- Multiple Grades: Use this if you know the grades and weights of the assignments you’ve completed so far, but don’t have a current overall average.
- Overall Class Grade: Use this if you have already taken your final exam and want to calculate your official final grade for the semester.
The Final Grade Formula: How the Math Works
If you want to calculate your final grade manually, you need to understand how weighted averages work. Most college and high school courses use a weighted grading system, meaning your final exam is worth a specific percentage of your total grade (usually between 15% and 50%).
To figure out what you need on the final, we use this mathematical formula:
Final Exam Grade Needed = [ Target Grade – Current Grade × ( 1 – Final Exam Weight ) ] / Final Exam Weight
Example: Let’s say you have a 75% in the class, you want an 80%, and the final is worth 30% (0.30) of your grade.
- Target = 80
- Current = 75
- Weight = 0.30
Calculation: [ 80 – 75 × (1 – 0.30) ] / 0.30 = 91.66%
You would need to score at least a 91.66% on your final exam to end the class with an 80%.
What is a Weighted Grade?
A weighted grade means that different categories of assignments have different impacts on your final score, regardless of how many points they are worth. For example, a teacher might make homework worth 20%, quizzes worth 30%, and the final exam worth 50%. Even if a homework assignment is graded out of 100 points and the final is graded out of 100 points, the final exam has a massively larger impact on your GPA.
